As we bid adieu to 2024, the year has been a reflection of growth, innovation, and progress for Astar Network. From launching new technologies to expanding our ecosystem through the introduction of Soneium, we’ve built a foundation that is stronger than ever.
Astar’s mission has always been to connect people to web3, and this year, we took another step forward by exploring growth and collaborations behind our current network—a well-thought move that solidifies Astar’s role at the core of a growing ecosystem. The groundwork we’ve laid throughout 2024 sets the stage for a transformative 2025, a year of exponential growth and even greater opportunities.
2024: A Year of Relentless Progress
Expanding the role of Astar from the native token of Astar L1 to a cross-ecosystem representative asset has been a cornerstone of our journey in 2024. This evolution has driven the adoption of web3 by embedding Astar deeply into the Soneium ecosystem, ensuring its utility and relevance extend far beyond its origins while laying the groundwork for a more interconnected and robust future.
January–March: an Early Start
The year began with the rollout of the Devnet for Astar zkEVM, setting the stage for a major leap in scalability. Simultaneously, the launch of dApp Staking v3 marked the final stage of Astar's new tokenomics, redesigning the staking model to be more dynamic and rewarding for users and developers. By March, we celebrated the mainnet launch of Astar zkEVM, alongside the debut of Yoki Origins, a vibrant new addition to our ecosystem. During this period, we also integrated LayerZero, to facilitate ASTR's cross-ecosystem compatibility. Additionally, we introduced top-tier infrastructure projects to empower developers on Astar zkEVM with advanced tools and solutions. Among these are The Graph, Gelato, Pyth, Crossmint, Acurast, and Rarible, to list a few.
April–May: Learnings and Innovation
Yoki Origins not only introduced new activities and opportunities for ASTR users but also provided valuable lessons. These insights helped refine our approach to ecosystem growth and the organization of large incentivized ecosystem campaigns. Additionally, we collaborated with renowned Japanese web2 industry leaders such as Casio, Mazda, Japan Airlines, and Japan Railway. Additionally, we introduced Astar Studio with Sequence, simplifying development for builders and creating a more accessible environment for innovation.
June–August: Bring the Heat
Summer saw some of the year’s most pivotal moments. We implemented a 350M ASTR burn, reflecting our commitment to long-term value creation. Offchain governance took root, empowering the community with a stronger voice in decision-making. In collaboration with Sonova, we launched the first NFT Marketplace for collectors and traders which was succeeded by the NFT Summer Campaign, designed to bootstrap the NFT ecosystem on Astar and introduce new activities for Astar users. Chainlink’s integration introduced secure and reliable solutions to the Astar ecosystem, while Binance staking offered more opportunities for holders to participate and earn.
In August, the launch of Soneium marked a new chapter for Astar. The Soneium testnet opened new possibilities for developers to push ASTR use cases behind our own ecosystem, while the announcement of Astar zkEVM transitioning to Soneium highlighted our long-term strategy. We also introduced Astar Evolution: Phase 1, laying the groundwork for continuous improvement.
September–November: Engagement Season
As fall arrived, we were deeply engaged in supporting Soneium Spark projects, setting grounds for ASTR adoption across Soneium ecosystem. At the same time, several technical updates were deployed on Astar L1, including async backing and Coretime on Shiden, which enhanced scalability and efficiency.
The LFGM campaign captured the spirit of our community, rallying support and engagement while introducing the first projects which will integrate ASTR on Soneium Mainnet. Alongside this, Astar Evolution: Phase 1.5 further refined our roadmap, setting the stage for 2025.
December: A Strong Finish
The year concluded with the highly anticipated launch of onchain governance, a milestone that places even more power in the hands of our community. We also introduced Astar Surge, an ongoing community-led initiative where users are able to earn rewards from the Soneium ecosystem with their ASTR and vASTR holdings.
Looking Ahead: 2025, The Year of Harvest
2025 is poised to be a defining year for Astar. After a year of relentless building and innovation, we are ready to bring our vision to life on an even grander scale.
This will be the year of:
- Ecosystem Expansion: Astar and Soneium will work in harmony to unlock new opportunities for builders and users alike with increased utilities of the ASTR token coming into action.
- Community Empowerment: We are committed to delivering value back to our holders and growing the vibrant community that has supported us every step of the way.
- Technical Improvements: To remain at the forefront of innovation, we will introduce new technical deliverables to stay aligned with Polkadot’s latest runtimes and the broader ecosystem. Key improvements such as Coretime on Polkadot and Async Backing on Astar Network will ensure enhanced performance and adaptability.
- Exponential Growth: The infrastructure is in place, the partnerships are forged, and the stage is set for Astar to make its mark in 2025.
With Astar Surge leading the charge and a detailed roadmap via Astar Evolution v1.5, the future looks brighter than ever.
We are grateful to everyone who has been part of our journey. The community’s trust and support are what drive the team to keep building, innovating, and pushing boundaries. 2024 was a year of progress; 2025 will be a year of transformation. Let’s achieve greatness together.
Here’s to an extraordinary year ahead!
